Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley dominate the AI stock boom in equities trading
By FinUties Research · · 12 min read · Research
The three banks have captured about 80% of a record $67B equities trading market in 2026 so far. Prime brokerage lending to hedge funds is a major driver, and the IMF has warned about crowded positions.
What happened
Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley have captured about 80% of a record $67B equities trading market in 2026 so far, according to an October 21 report. [1] The report ties the dominance to demand for AI stocks, relaxed regulatory capital rules and aggressive margin lending to hedge funds. [1]
Prime brokerage, which is leveraged lending to hedge funds, has changed from a cyclical business into a high-margin engine. [1] Goldman's equities financing jumped 96% in the third quarter. [1] The same report lists several systemic risks: record leverage, concentrated client bases and IMF warnings that crowded positions could cause instability. [1]
How we got here
The share gains build on a run of results and deals this year. On June 3, Alphabet announced an $80 billion equity offering to fund AI infrastructure, with $10 billion going to Berkshire Hathaway. [2] Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley were joint book-runners. [2] Goldman's co-CEO described the issuance as "unprecedented territory". [2] The deal pointed to heavy demand for AI computing capacity and strong appetite for large tech equity raises, though its size raised questions about execution and market absorption. [2]
On July 14, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase reported record quarterly revenue. [3] Goldman's revenue rose 39% to $20.3 billion, and JPMorgan's rose 27% to $58 billion. [3] Equities trading and investment banking drove the increases. [3] Executives said AI was present across financial markets, including IPOs, index rebalancing and activity in Asia. [3] Goldman CEO David Solomon described an early-stage AI capital-spending super cycle expected to last three to five years. [3] He said it was creating financing demand across instruments, regions and industries. [3] Both banks' shares rose sharply in afternoon trading that day. [3]
Morgan Stanley followed on October 14 with third-quarter results that beat consensus on earnings per share and total revenue. [4] Equities trading revenue rose 41% to $5.8 billion, about $909 million above StreetAccount expectations, and Asia stood out as a region. [4] Fixed income trading and investment banking fell short of expectations. [4] Premarket shares dipped slightly as analysts focused on CEO Ted Pick's outlook for M&A and IPOs in a higher-rate environment. [4]
The October 21 report therefore adds the concentration figure and the financing angle to a pattern already visible in the quarterly results: equities trading, not the other business lines, supplied most of the upside. [1][4]
The backdrop has not been calm. On January 12, President Trump called for a one-year 10% cap on credit card interest rates, and bank and card-related shares fell sharply. [5] On January 13, JPMorgan CFO Jeremy Barnum said the industry could fight the demand, with litigation among the options. [6] In early March, the Middle East conflict disrupted LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz, and Qatar ceased LNG production after drone strikes. [7][8] By September the conflict had entered its seventh month, with Brent crude stabilizing around $80-100/barrel. [9] On October 13 the IMF said advanced AI-integrated economies, including the US, Taiwan and South Korea, were insulated from the energy shock, while vulnerable oil-importing countries faced debt and spending strain. [10]
Why it matters for markets
The concentration of trading and financing in three banks could make their results a gauge of AI-linked market activity. Their revenue has risen with equities trading and investment banking tied to the AI theme. [3][4] If the AI capital-spending cycle continues as Solomon described, financing demand across instruments and regions could keep supporting that activity. [3]
The same structure could also amplify stress. Prime brokerage earnings depend on leveraged hedge fund clients, and the report points to record leverage and a concentrated client base. [1] The IMF's warning about crowded positions suggests that a sharp reversal in AI-related holdings could spread through the lenders that finance them. [1] Whether that would happen is not yet known.
Household behavior is another channel. JPMorgan Chase Institute analysis found that 8.2% of individuals transferred money from investments to checking in the three months through April 2026, up from 4% in 2019. [11] Those flows equaled 6.8% of checking-account spending. [11] Researchers linked the pattern to larger household equity wealth and the wealth effect. [11] If equity prices fell, that spending support could weaken, though that is an inference and not something shown to be happening now.
The IMF's description of uneven growth, with AI-integrated economies insulated from the energy shock, is consistent with the AI theme carrying markets. [10] It also means the boom coexists with the war-driven stress that the IMF describes elsewhere. [10]
What to watch
- Whether equities financing growth, such as Goldman's 96% jump in the third quarter, continues in later quarters, and whether the relaxed capital rules change. [1]
- Further IMF commentary on leverage and crowded positions. [1]
- Whether Morgan Stanley's M&A and IPO outlook improves in a higher-rate environment, given that fixed income and investment banking undershot expectations. [4]
- Further large equity raises, after Alphabet's $80 billion offering tested market absorption. [2]
- Whether China resumes oil purchases at its pre-war pace, since the Strait of Hormuz closure is still choking off approximately 20% of world energy supply and Goldman has warned of prices reaching $120/barrel. [9]
- Any renewed push on the credit card interest cap, which JPMorgan said the industry could contest. [5][6]
