Jio Platforms lists at a 21% premium after India's largest IPO
By FinUties Research · · 12 min read · Research
Jio Platforms began trading on NSE and BSE on 28 October 2026 at ₹1,358 per share, against an issue price of ₹1,119. It closed higher on a day when the broader Sensex and Nifty fell.
What happened
Jio Platforms listed on the NSE and BSE on 28 October 2026 at ₹1,358 per share. That was a 21.36% premium to the ₹1,119 issue price [1][2]. The shares closed at ₹1,417.50, nearly 27% above the issue price [2][3].
The offering raised about ₹30,200 crore, or roughly $3.2 billion, and was India's largest IPO [1][4]. One report puts the issue size at ₹32,000 crore [2]. It was oversubscribed more than 22 times, with demand above ₹7.4 lakh crore [2].
At listing, Jio's market capitalisation was about ₹12.5 lakh crore. That put it ahead of Bharti Airtel as India's second-most-valued listed company, behind Reliance Industries [1][2]. After the close, its valuation was put at about ₹13 lakh crore [3].
The wider market was weak. The BSE Sensex fell 352.64 points, or 0.48%, to 73,246.03, after an intraday drop of 995.1 points. The Nifty lost 50.90 points to 22,698.85 [3]. Reliance Industries and IT stocks led the declines. Brent crude rose 0.99% to $114.5 a barrel, linked to Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. Caution before the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy decision also weighed on sentiment [3].
Reliance Industries holds over 66% of Jio. Meta's Jaadhu Holdings and Google International hold roughly 10% and 7.7% [4]. Nomura initiated a positive rating, citing an ending capex cycle and an expected improvement in free cash flow [4].
How we got here
FinUties' news monitor has logged 5 reports on this story from 2 outlets in recent days. It has also logged 41 earlier related reports going back to 5 December 2025.
The groundwork was laid earlier in the year. On 5 February 2026, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani were reported to be urging Indians to move savings from gold into equities. Their joint venture, Jio BlackRock Asset Management, had $353 million in equity fund assets by December 2025 [5]. By 13 August 2026, that venture had approval to launch two outbound funds from GIFT City before the end of September [6].
On 31 August 2026, Jio Platforms received regulatory approval for its public offering. One estimate at the time said it could raise about 377 billion rupees ($3.9 billion). The proceeds were to fund debt reduction at subsidiary Reliance Jio Infocomm. Meta and Google were not selling their stakes [7].
On 19 October 2026, the anchor book drew a record ₹2.5 lakh crore in institutional bids, more than 30 times oversubscribed. A total of ₹8,109.85 crore went to 212 anchor investors at ₹1,119 per share. Domestic mutual funds took 34.34% of the anchor portion. Global asset managers and sovereign wealth funds from Abu Dhabi and Singapore also took part. Jio was described as having 533.3M subscribers and 60% of India's data traffic [8]. That report cautioned that strong institutional demand did not guarantee retail demand or gains after listing [8].
The public offer then opened. It was fully covered within roughly 95 to 100 minutes on 21 October [1][4][9]. By 23 October it had become the first IPO globally to receive over 1 crore applications, surpassing Waaree Energies' earlier record of 97 lakh applications [9].
What changed on 28 October is that the shares began trading. The listing gain was well above the issue price, and Jio moved past Bharti Airtel in market value [1][2].
Why it matters for markets
The listing could be read as a sign that Indian investors will take up very large equity offerings. The anchor book, the application count and the subscription multiple all pointed to deep demand [2][8][9]. Whether that demand holds in later trading is not yet known.
The debut came against a weak backdrop. On 27 October, the Sensex and Nifty were already lower in early trade. Brent was at $115 a barrel, IT stocks were under selling pressure, and foreign portfolio investors had pulled out ₹1,462.49 crore on 26 October [10]. Jio's gain on a down day could suggest the stock drew demand separate from the broader market. Whether it also drew funds away from other stocks is not yet known.
Because the proceeds are meant to reduce debt at Reliance Jio Infocomm, the offering could lower the group's leverage [7]. The size of that debt and the expected effect are not yet known.
Jio's move to second place in market value could also change how it compares with Reliance Industries and Bharti Airtel [2]. How index providers will treat the stock is not yet known.
What to watch
- Trading after the debut. Whether Jio holds its first-day close of ₹1,417.50, and how its valuation compares with Reliance Industries and Bharti Airtel [2].
- The Federal Reserve decision. The two-day policy meeting kept Indian markets cautious this week [3][10].
- Crude oil and foreign flows. Brent near $114.5 to $115 a barrel and recent outflows by foreign portfolio investors are pressure points for Indian equities [3][10].
- Use of proceeds. Details on how the IPO money is applied to debt reduction at Reliance Jio Infocomm [7].
- Other large offerings. India's offering calendar was described as heavy, including a still-pending National Stock Exchange offering [7]. Whether Jio's trading influences how those are received is not yet known.
